Developed using Asahi Kasei’s world-leading technologies of hollow fiber virus removal filters and polymer science, Planova™ BioEX filters incorporate durable hydrophilic modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes. The membranes are specially designed to meet a critical need in downstream biopharmaceutical processing for robust virus filters which exhibit enhanced pathogen safety, higher filtration capacities and shorter processing times even under harsh conditions. With Planova™ BioEX filters, users are able to efficiently filter large volumes of high protein concentration solutions, which are typically problematic for traditional types of virus removal filters, particularly those with flat-sheet membranes.
Like Planova™ 15N, 20N, 35N and 75N filters, Planova™ BioEX filter also contains a bundle of straw-shaped hollow fibers. The wall of each hollow fiber has a three-dimensional web structure of pores comprised of voids interconnected by fine capillaries.
Based on size exclusion mechanism, membrane structure of Planova™ BioEX allows proteins to easily pass through the hollow fiber walls while viruses are efficiently captured in these pores. During filtration of protein solutions, viruses are effectively removed yet proteins smoothly permeate the membrane, resulting in high protein recovery rates without adsorption or denaturation.
