asahi Kasei Medical acquires U.S. based mycoplasma testing services provider Bionique
asahi Kasei Medical Co., Ltd.
asahi Kasei Medical Co., Ltd. today announced that it has (via a wholly owned subsidiary) fully acquired Bionique Testing Laboratories LLC (Bionique), a leader in mycoplasma testing services for the biotherapeutics and life-sciences industries. The transaction was completed on December 15, 2021 (US Eastern Time).
Mycoplasmas are bacteria that are of particular concern in the manufacture of biotherapeutics (medicines composed of, or derived from, biological substances). This is because mycoplasmas are typically pathogenic, difficult to detect, and display natural resistance to antibiotics. Furthermore, contamination countermeasures are very difficult to implement. Therefore, mycoplasma testing services such as those offered by Bionique are critical to patient safety, as they enable the avoidance of mycoplasma contamination throughout a wide range of steps during the research, process development and manufacturing of biotherapeutics. Bionique is known for its unmatched expertise in mycoplasma testing, and has over 30 years of specialist experience in this field. Bionique is also gaining attention for its ability to provide validated GMP solutions to especially challenging issues faced when performing mycoplasma testing in connection with emerging and rapidly growing treatment modalities such as cell and gene therapy, and regenerative medicines.

Explore filters that match your virus removal needs for biopharmaceutical processes. asahi Kasei Bioprocess - Pioneering Biologics Safety and Manufacturing Efficiency
Generally, virus removal using a virus filter is based on size exclusion mechanism, which means that viruses larger than the mean pore size of the filter membrane are retained while target protein molecules that are smaller in size pass through to be recovered.
Planova™ filters are available in various pore sizes to match the virus removal needs of particular product applications, as outlined in the figure below.

Launch of Planova™ BioEX Virus Filters for Biopharmaceutical Processing
asahi Kasei Medical Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce the commercial launch on June 17 of Planova™ BioEX, its new generation of hollow fiber membrane virus filters. Planova™ BioEX filters are specifically designed to meet the urgent need in downstream biopharmaceutical processing for robust virus filters that not only enhance safety, but also have higher filtration capacities and shorter processing times, even under demanding filtration conditions such as high protein concentration and high filtration pressure.
Developed using asahi Kasei Medical's unique technology base in cellulose hollow fiber virus filters and polymer science, Planova™ BioEX filters incorporate a durable hydrophilic PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) hollow fiber membrane, enabling them to cope with the harsh processing conditions typical of state of the art biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Using Planova™ BioEX filters, it is now possible to safely and efficiently filter large volumes of high protein concentration solutions, which are typically problematic for traditional types of virus removal filters, particularly those with flat membranes.
The key features of Planova™ BioEX filters are as follows:

Construction of new spinning plant for Planova™ filters
asahi Kasei Medical will construct a new plant for the spinning of cellulose hollow-fiber membranes for Planova™ virus removal filters in Nobeoka, Miyazaki, Japan, increasing annual production capacity by 40,000 m²/year upon completion in May 2019.
Virus removal filters are used to enhance safety in the production process for biotherapeutic products such as biopharmaceuticals and plasma derivatives. asahi Kasei Medical has earned wide recognition among customers around the world for the performance and reliability of its virus removal filters―both Planova™ cellulose membrane filters, which were launched in 1989 as the world's first filters developed specifically for removing viruses from biotherapeutic products, and Planova™ BioEX hydrophilic PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane filters, which provide superior viral clearance in high protein concentration solutions. With heightened standards throughout the world for the viral safety of biotherapeutics and advances in the development of monoclonal antibodies and other biopharmaceuticals, global demand for Planova™ filters is expected to continue on growing. The new spinning plant will enable asahi Kasei Medical to maintain stable product supply and meet rising demand. Together with a spinning plant for Planova™ BioEX filters completed in Oita, Japan, in 2016, the new spinning plant announced today will increase asahi Kasei Medical's total production capacity for hollow-fiber virus removal membranes to 130,000 m²/year.
asahi Kasei Medical will continue to contribute to greater safety of biotherapeutic products by developing high-quality and high-performance products in accordance with market needs, while proactively investing in manufacturing facilities.
Limited Free access: a Case Study on Planova™ BioEX Was Published on Biologicals
Recently, a study titled "Validation and implementation of Planova™ BioEX virus filters in the manufacture of a new liquid intravenous immunoglobulin in China" was published on Biologicals (Ma et al, 2018). The study reports the development and optimization of a manufacturing-scale virus removal step for intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) using Planova™ BioEX.
From the results, it was demonstrated that improved viral safety of IVIG can be assured by implementing a virus removal step using Planova™ BioEX to ensure effective parvovirus clearance. Furthermore, excellent protein recovery was achieved and there was no detectable impact on product biochemical properties.

June 12 and 13, 2014
asahi Kasei Corporation Develops Planova™ Virus Removal Filters with Larger Membrane Surface area
asahi Kasei Corporation today unveiled Planova™ virus removal filters with effective surface areas of 4.0 m² for the Planova™ 15N, 20N, and 35N filter lines. Representing a four-fold increase over the current largest effective membrane size of 1.0 m², the new 4.0 m² filters reduce the number of filters needed for a manufacturing cycle and the overall time required for filter integrity testing.
Employing a filter housing that is two-fold larger in diameter and equivalent in length to the housing of the current 1.0 m² Planova™ filters, the 4.0 m² filters can easily be integrated into existing manufacturing operations. Filter components meet the USP Biological Reactivity Test, in vivo, for Class VI plastics.
Commercial release is scheduled to begin in early December 2002.
Formation of asahi Kasei Pharma Corporation
asahi Kasei Corporation today organized all of its healthcare-related businesses under its newly formed, wholly owned subsidiary asahi Kasei Pharma Corporation. asahi Kasei Pharma includes asahi Kasei businesses in pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical intermediates, diagnostics, and biopharmaceutical/biological filtration products for virus removal under the Planova™ brand name.
The establishment of asahi Kasei Pharma is an integral part of a transformation program at asahi Kasei Corporation to a holding company configuration to enhance management speed and transparency. Under this transformation program, all asahi Kasei core businesses have been separated into seven separate business units and a new system of executive officer management has been established to facilitate quick response to changing business environments and clear delineation of authority and responsibility.
about asahi Kasei Corporation
Transfer of Planova™ Business to asahi Kasei Medical
The Planova™ virus removal filter business has been transferred from asahi Kasei Pharma Corp. to its subsidiary asahi Kasei Medical Co., Ltd. The combination will enable synergy to be obtained between the membrane and filtration technologies of Planova™ and those of asahi Kasei Medical's therapeutic and blood transfusion devices.
The Planova™ Division, as a discrete operating unit, has been transferred in its entirety; all production and distribution systems, sales and support personnel, and other contacts and relationships remain unchanged.
Planova™ Filters
asahi Kasei Bioprocess, Inc. unveiled the new standard Virus Filtration Controller equipped to remove viruses from biopharmaceuticals and plasma derivatives. The Virus Filtration Controller is a robust system that performs automated, consistent virus-removal using Planova™ filters for pilot, clinical, and commercial-scale manufacturing. The modest footprint of 864 mm x 686 mm (34" x 27") accommodates the majority of downstream processing facilities. Similarly, new features such as built-in vertical Visual Leak Testing coupled with customary virus filtration operations such as equilibration, filtration, and washing elevate Planova™ functionality to unprecedented levels.
Changing the landscape of virus filtration
Large filtration systems are no longer conducive to biologics manufacturing plants faced with limited floor space. Simultaneously, virus removal during downstream processing has become increasingly more complex given the unique requirements of individual candidate molecules. The Virus Filtration Controller addresses these needs by offering:
Completion of a New assembly Plant for Planova™ Virus Removal Filters
asahi Kasei Medical Co., Ltd. has completed construction of a new plant for assembly of Planova™ virus removal filters in Oita, Japan. With capacity of 40,000 m²/year, the new plant doubles total production capacity for Planova™ filters to 80,000 m²/year.
Planova™ virus removal filters are used to enhance safety in the production process for biotherapeutic products such as biopharmaceuticals and plasma derivatives. The outstanding performance of Planova™ filters--combining high rates of virus clearance with high rates of protein recovery--has been widely recognized throughout the world, and over 90% of Planova™ sales are to customers in Europe and the US. Demand for Planova™ products is poised for steady growth, with production of biopharmaceuticals forecasted to grow at over 10% per year until 2015.
The newly completed plant complements asahi Kasei Medical's plants in Nobeoka, Miyazaki, Japan, for the spinning of hollow-fiber membrane and the assembly of Planova™ filters. Being located in Oita, one of the main production sites for medical devices and related products of the asahi Kasei Group, the new plant will serve to reduce location risk in Planova™ production. This expansion of capacity underscores asahi Kasei Medical's commitment as the market leader to maintain stable supply and high product quality in line with growing demand.
Launch of BioOptimal™ MF-SL Microfilters for Bioprocessing
asahi Kasei Medical Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce the commercial launch on august 1 of BioOptimal™ MF-SL, its new range of microfilters for bioprocessing applications. Designed specifically for use in cell culture clarification applications, BioOptimal™ MF-SL filters enable biopharmaceutical manufacturers to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their protein harvest step.

asahi Kasei Corporation (formerly asahi Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.) today introduced the Planova™ 20N filter, designed to retain small non-enveloped viruses, such as parvovirus and hepatitis a virus (HaV), with virus removal factors in excess of 4 logs, while providing high recovery rates for proteins, including plasma-derived immunoglobulin (IgG), Factor VIII, and fibrinogen.
Biotherapeutic product manufacturers and regulatory authorities alike have drawn attention to the limitations of current methods to remove or inactivate non-enveloped viruses across a range of biotherapeutic products with varying molecule sizes and physico-chemical properties. The Planova™ 20N filter removes significant levels of even the smallest of these viruses using size exclusion, irrespective of virus properties.
"The unique structure of the Planova™ 20N membrane enables greater volumes per surface area unit to be effectively cleared of viruses," said Yasuichiro Yano, General Manager, Planova™ Division at asahi Kasei. "This results in a filtration profile unmatched by comparable products currently available on the market."
